Adopting Kittens in Pairs

Despite popular opinion, cats are very social creatures, and require a close knit community, just like us humans. As social creatures, they are designed to thrive in social settings. Their early interactions with others, especially during kitten-hood, shape who they are and will become. Among the most important social interactions during kitten-hood are those with playmates. Having playmates is not only fun, but it is also crucial for a kitten’s physical, emotional, and social development.

One of the most apparent benefits of having playmates is that it promotes physical activity. Kittens who have playmates are more likely to engage in physical activities such as running, jumping, and playing games that require movement. Such activities help in developing their motor skills, coordination, balance, and agility. Moreover, playing with other kittens helps then build their muscles, increase stamina, and improve overall physical health. It is also a wonderful way to use up all that kitten energy, which if not properly directed, can result in behavioral issues such as biting, scratching, climbing the curtains, and play attacking their human family. Play attacking can turn into serious attacking if not corrected immediately. Never let a kitten play attack with you, always use toys such as wands, lasers, kickers, etc. If you cannot afford these toys, you can make your own with old socks, dish towels, etc. Following are links to some interactive toys you can purchase, and also instructions to make your own. Playing with other kitties also has numerous emotional benefits for kittens. Kittens have emotions just like children do; and who can understand them better than their own feline friends? Kittens love to wrestle and play, as well as cuddle and groom each other. Having a best friend and playmate is absolutely crucial in the emotional development of a happy, healthy kitten.

Socialization is another critical aspect of having playmates. Kittens who play with others develop their social skills, such as communication and cooperation. They learn how to share, negotiate, compromise, and resolve conflicts, which are essential skills that they will need throughout their lives.

In conclusion, having playmates is essential for a kitten’s physical, emotional, and social development. It promotes physical activity, emotional well-being and socialization. This is why we always encourage pet parents to adopt kittens in pairs, unless they already have a cat/s in the home.
